Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses the 1064 Nd:YAG from Cutera, if you hate shaving, are prone to razor rash, folliculitis or have a skin condition such as Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), laser hair removal can make a world of difference!

  • The Nd:YAG utilises the mechanism ‘Selective Photo thermolysis’ in other words, light, heat, destroy. By targeting the pigment within the hair, the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment, causing rapid heating and damage to the hair follicle whilst keeping surrounding skin healthy and intact.

This, over multiple treatments will reduce the hair growth experienced, making hairs lighter, finer or incapable of growth. Reducing the need to shave as regularly, wax or tweeze unwanted hairs, and reduces the skin related concerns as hair regrows such as ingrown hairs.

  • Laser hair removal can reduce the hair for almost all skin types, however, hair that is blonde or grey will not be targeted by the laser as there is minimal to no pigment within the hair.

It is important to go through a thorough consultation with your clinician to determine if this treatment is suitable for your hair and skin type.

  • Laser hair removal has minimal downtime, patients will often see mild redness in the area of treatment, and perifollicular oedema or swelling of the hair follicle, this can cause a bit of itchiness at times and some sensitivity that can last up to 48 hours post treatment.

  • Laser hair removal is highly dependent on the hair and skin type; however, most patients will need up to 10 active treatments and ongoing maintenance treatments.

Laser hair removal is NOT a permanent solution, as hormones change hair growth can return so ongoing maintenance is required.

  • Laser hair removal is often spaced between 3 to 4 weeks apart to ensure adequate downtime between treatments and to help regulate hair growth cycle.

It is important to cease tweezing and waxing as this will stop laser hair removal from working. Shaving is acceptable between treatments and the day prior to the treatment.

  • When you arrive, your clinician will take you through a thorough consultation. Your clinician will perform a thorough cleanse of the area and apply safety goggles to ensure adequate eye protection.

The treatment may use a glide gel which allows the laser to move across the skin and provides some extra protection to sensitive areas.

The clinician will program the machine cool the area, and fire. The patient should feel a snapping sensation and sometimes a small heating sensation.
